The Oxford Avondale United Hockey team traveled to Lapeer to face an 8-6 Alliance hockey team. The last 4 meetings with Alliance had resulted in 4 losses. Senior Goalie Aaron Angelo was back in net for OAU and kept Alliance at bay for most of the first period until the 8:13 mark when Alliance broke through with a goal. OAU responded less than a minute later when Sophomore Forward Kyle Vogler banked a pass off the boards to Senior Captain Ben Pratt who rushed in on the left side joined by Sophomore Forward Jake Billis coming down center ice. Pratt was able to make a great pass to Billis who scored to tie the game 1-1, which is how the period ended.
The second period had Alliance picking up the shots on Goalie Aaron Angelo who made some spectacular saves early. OAU was able to take the score to 2-1 when Captain Ben Pratt stole a puck in the neutral zone and skated in and put a shot on net that was saved but Senior Forward Zach Rauh was able to jump on the rebound and put it past the Alliance net minder. OAU fought off a Alliance Power Play only to give up a goal shortly after to let Alliance tie the game 2-2. The period looked to end that way when a turnover resulted in another Alliance goal at the 1:29 mark, putting Alliance up 3-2.
The third period started the same as the second with Alliance attacking the OAU zone, only to have Goalie Aaron Angelo make big stops in net. Alliance finally got one by him at the 10:11 mark of the period, putting Alliance up 4-2. OAU was again able to score less than a minute later when Junior Defenseman Donovin Thompson started a play out of the zone, where Forward Jake Billis scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Freshman Forward Brian Budde. 4-3 would be as close as OAU would get as Alliance scored with only 3:12 left to make the score 5-3. OAU pulled Angelo to give them six skaters only to give up an Empty Net goal at the 1:08 mark to take it to 6-3. Alliance then added a goal with only 15 seconds left to make the final 7-3.
Goalie Aaron Angelo made 38 saves on 44 shots. Jake Billis had 2 goals, and Ben Pratt had 2 assists to lead OAU.
OAU travels to Lakeland Arena on Friday January 11th to take on West Bloomfield at 8:20 pm.
