The Wildcats invited out-of-conference opponent Kingston to the Ian Smith Gymnasium in a down to the wire thriller. Oxford would win out 33-32 over the Cardinals.
Oxford caught Kingston on their heels to begin the first quarter, applying tough full court pressure. Oxford created 3 consecutive turnovers for the Cardinals and capitalized on their mistakes, leading 9 - 7 heading into the second quarter.
Kingston regained their footing answering with an offensive threat of their own. #13 from the Cardinals bench sank three 3 pointers before the end of the second half. Oxford stalled on offense before finding momentum in a pair of threes from Methner and Morris. The Wildcats would trail 20-25 going into halftime.
A quiet third quarter garnered a combined 11 points from both teams. It would set the stage for an eventful fourth quarter. With three minutes remaining, the Wildcats trailed by three. Within a minute and a half Oxford capitalized on a steal and drew a foul resulting in two free throws, putting up four points. 31-30, the Cardinals trailed but worked to find a drive and finished with a lay in to regain the lead. With 24 seconds remaining, Oxford made their way down the floor one last time. Hershman would drive with no success, Methner rebounded with a put back denied, Cato would clean up sinking the game winning bucket with 9 seconds remaining. The Cardinals had no answer before time expired. A thrilling win for the Wildcats.
Oxford travels to Avondale High School to take on the Yellow Jackets tomorrow evening.
