On Tuesday night, February 20th, the Oxford Avondale United Hockey team traveled to Troy United's home rink. OA was starting Senior Goalie Aaron Angelo in net, and with the help of some strong defense, were able to hold Troy United to 1 goal on 20 shots. OA skating with over a 1/3 less players, were able to take away any open ice while blocking multiple shots, while Goalie Angelo was able to make many big saves to frustrate Troy.
The second period continued to frustrate Troy as Angelo stood even taller stopping all 23 shots that he faced while his teammates skated with the heavy upperclassmen laden Troy club. After the second period the score was still 1-0 in favor of Troy, with OA though tired, hoping to be able to break through in the third.
Troy was able to go up 2-0 in the first 30 seconds of the 3rd period on a defensive let down that allowed a rebound goal after Angelo made the initial save. OA was able to go on the Power Play at the 15:47 mark and scored less than 15 seconds later as Sophomore Forward Brendan Vogler dug out the puck against the boards and feathered a pass to Freshman Forward Brian Budde for the goal to bring the score to 2-1. Troy was able to counter just over a minute later beating Angelo again on a rebound. Troy continued to attack the net and their team depth started to show as they quickly got the score to 5-1 before Senior Captain Ben Pratt in his first game back from illness, took a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in past multiple defenders to snap a wrist shot that beat the Troy net minder high. This was as close as OA got as Troy continued to roll putting 5 more goals in net to bring the final to 10-2.
Senior Goalie Aaron Angelo made 57 saves on 67 shots.
OA will play again this Saturday, February 23rd at the Onyx in Rochester against Royal Oak in the Oakland Activities Association Match up Day at 1:15 pm.
