Oxford Soccer Takes On Cross Rival Lake Orion

Oxford visited crosstown rival Lake Orion on a great night for soccer.

Both teams drew 1 -1 last year in a great game and nothing less was expected tonight. Both teams were sitting in the top half of the standing in the OAA White and looked to stay that way. The first half was a back and forth onslaught as the Wildcats controlled much of the possession and goal scoring opportunities. It was Lake Orion who pinged in a goal off a corner kick. After a few errant clearances the Dragons roofed a shot to go up 1 – 0. On the ensuing kick off the Wildcats drove the ball into the Dragon penalty box and as a result a player was taken down for an foul. The play resumed with no foul being called. Oxford continued to attack the Lake Orion goal and had two corner kick opportunity shots barely miss the goal. With less than a minute to play in the half Oxford earned a free-kick from about 30+ yards out. Forward Marco Artero stepped up and curled the shot over the wall and past the keeper to tie the game up and end the half.

With more determination and resolve in the second half the Wildcats came out firing. However, it was Lake Orion who took a long shot from 40 yards that squeezed through the arms of the Oxford keeper. Lake Orion now led 2 – 1. That would be the Dragons only shot on frame in the second half. Oxford continued to pressure the Lake Orion defense and had numerous opportunities to get the equalizer. The Dragons moved to a more defensive formation to hold off the Wildcats. The game ended 2 -1 in favor of Lake Orion.
