Oxford Boys Varsity Tennis finished 4th at the Eisenhower Quad Tournament this weekend. Oxford had a strong showing as it battled three teams that were state qualifiers last season - Stoney Creek, Grand Blanc, and Eisenhower. This was one of Oxford's highest point totals at this Quad with 6 points. Grand Blanc 16; Stoney Creek 15; Eisenhower 11; and Oxford 6.
Oxford also produced medal winners this year. The #2 Doubles combo of Gabe Smith and Chase Maier swept through the competition, winning all three matches to take home first place in their flight. The duo defeated Stoney Creek 6-4, 7-5; Grand Blanc 6-1, 2-6, 6-4; and Eisenhower 6-4, 6-4 to take home the gold medal. At #1 Singles Oxford's Hayden Durant took second place this year. In route to the silver medal Durant defeated Grand Blanc 6-0, 6-0 and Eisenhower 7-5, 0-6, 6-4, before falling to Stoney Creek 1-6, 1-6.
Oxford's #1 Doubles combo of Dane VonAllmen and Silas VonAllmen also earned points for Oxford by defeating Eisenhower 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
"I really enjoy this Quad Tournament every year. It's a difficult quad, against teams that routinely go to state each year, but playing such quality competition gets us ready for OAA League play and for MHSAA Regional play." Said Head Coach Ryan Ruzziconi "Our players gain invaluable experience from this Quad each year, it frankly makes them better players for the second half of the season."
"Lake Orion is always a tough team and a good rivalry. Difficult to play there and every single match was a battle, and that showed not only in the individual match scores, but also in the fact the match finished 4-4. Royal Oak is a good program and a tough way to open OAA League play by battling them on the road. I was proud of our team. They went into Royal Oak and put out a really solid performance, and did that even with one of our players (4S) being out with the flu. It also helped that our doubles teams dominated and swept all doubles matches. A nice win to open league play."
