The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey Team, playing their third game in four nights, hosted the Marysville Vikings at the Detroit Skate Club on Monday November 25th. Marysville was able to score on their first play in OAU's zone as they pushed a rebound by Junior Goalie Brett Dinges just 30 seconds in. OAU was able to respond while on the Power Play at the 9:48 mark, when Sophomore Benn Hepp scored on a great passing play from Juniors Nate Poplars and Ryan Honig to tie the game. The Vikings responded less than two minutes later getting back on top 2-1. OAU tied the score again when Ben Hepp stole a puck at the blue line and skated in to beat the Viking Goalie with a well placed back handed shot. However, Marysville took the lead yet again 15 seconds later and held that 3-2 lead into the next period.
The second period had both teams attacking when OAU took a penalty at the 9:39 mark. Marysville was able to cash in and scored on the Power Play to take a 4-2 lead. It looked like the 2nd period would end that way but Senior Defenseman Donovin Thompson was able to start a breakout out of OAU's zone and pass it ahead to a streaking forward, Sophomore Brian Budde, who fired a shot that hit off the Vikings goalie's shoulder and hit the top corner of the net with only 21 seconds left to put the score at 4-3.
OAU kept up the pressure in the 3rd period with multiple attacks at the Marysville zone and were able to break through when Ben Hepp scored his third goal of the game, assisted by Senior Forward Matt Schultz and Sophomore Forward Freddie Fresard to tie the game 4-4. But once again, Marysville responded just over a minute later and beat Goalie Brett Dinges to take the lead once again 5-4. OAU pulled their goalie at the 1:30 mark and Marysville was able to score into the open net at the 50 second mark. OAU was not done though, after winning the ensuing face off, Nate Poplars was able to take the puck in, pass it to Ben Hepp who scored his fourth goal of the game with 42 seconds left bringing the score to 6-5, but that was all they could do as their last flurry at the Marysville net was denied.
Sophomore Forward Ben Hepp had 4 goals to lead OAU in the loss. Junior Goalie Brett Dinges faced 28 shots, making 23 saves.
OAU's next game is on Thursday December 5th at 7:55 pm at the Detroit Skate Club against Notre Dame Prep.
