OAU loses close one to Utica United 4-3.
The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey team hosted Utica United on Thursday February 6th hoping to avenge their loss earlier in the season. It did not start well for OAU as Utica won the opening faceoff skated into the top of the circle and put the first shot of the game past Junior Goalie Austin Spivey to go up 1-0. The teams traded multiple offensive chances until OAU broke through on a play that started in their own end when Sophomore Defensemen Coen Hao passed it out to Freshman Forward Alex Palombit who found Sophomore Forward Ben Hepp streaking in then cutting across the Utica net and pushing the puck between the Utica Goalies pads to tie the game at 1-1. Utica was able to go up 2-1 with 6 minutes remaining in the period.
OAU started the 2nd period on the Powerplay but a turnover in the neutral zone led to Utica putting a long shot on net that beat Goalie Spivey and taking Utica to a 3-1 lead. Junior Goalie Brett Dinges came in relief and was able to stop all 14 shots that he faced. OAU was able to cut into the lead 3-2 with only 12 seconds remaining in the period, again breaking out of their zone when Ben Hepp passed to Sophomore Forward Brian Budde who skated up and found Junior Forward Nate Poplars who back handed a shot into the top of the net.
OAU was able to tie the game 3-3 one minute into the 3rd period when Ben Hepp scored his second goal of the game after taking a dump in pass around behind the net and wrapping a shot around the post to just beat Utica's goalie who did not slide over quick enough. He was assisted by Brian Budde and Junior Defensemen Brendan Vogler. Utica was able to regain the lead while on the Powerplay when they were able to put a rebound into the net after Goalie Dinges made the initial save. OAU tried in vain to tie the game late with their goalie pulled but Utica's goalie was able to stonewall their final attempts.
Junior Goalie Brett Dinges was able to make 30 saves on 31 shots in relief. Sophomore Forward Ben Hepp had 2 goals for OAU adding to his team leading total of 18 for the season.
OAU falls to L'anse Creuse 8-0
The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey team traveled to Mt. Clemens on Saturday, February 8th to take on the Unified team from L'anse Creuse. OAU was short handed 4 skaters to start the game and the Senior laden L'anse Creuse team had them chasing for most of the 1st period. Junior Goalie Brett Dinges kept OAU in the game early making 12 saves while only giving up one goal on a great passing play in front of the net. The period ended with L'anse Creuse up 1-0.
The 2nd period had OAU losing another forward to injury and moving one of their Defensemen up to play winger. L'anse Creuse increased their offensive attacks on OAU and scored 3 more goals in the period, one on the Powerplay, to go up 4-0. OAU was not able to get any of their 6 shots on net by the opposing goalie.
The 3rd period was more of the same as L'anse Creuse continued their fast attacks in OAU's zone and put 4 more goals into the net to end the game early by mercy rule, 8-0.
