The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey team traveled to the Dort Arena in Flint to take on the Grand Blanc Bobcats on Thursday February 11th. OAU was able to get on the board quickly when Sophomore Forward Isaac Shellswell put a shot on net and Junior Forward Nate Poplars buried the rebound. Grand Blanc was able to come right back with a pair of goals that beat Junior Goalie Austin Spivey to go up 2-1. OAU was able to respond minutes later when Nate Poplars scored his second of the game assisted by Junior Ethan Schneider and Sophomore Brian Budde. Both teams traded chances when OAU went up 3-2 thanks to a snapshot by Ethan Schneider assisted by Poplars and Budde. Several Minutes later, OAU added a pair of goals, both by Sophomore Forward Ben Hepp. The first one was unassisted as he stole the puck and drove on net, the second was assisted by Isaac Shellswell and Junior Brendan Vogler. OAU up 5-2 was not done in the period as they added a sixth goal when Nate Poplars was stopped on a wrist shot only to have the puck come out to Brendan Vogler who snapped it top shelf.
The 2nd period had both teams trading multiple shots on goal as they both picked up the pace of the game. OAU went up 7-2 when Sophomore Defensemen Coen Hao intercepted an errant pass and fired a wrist shot past the Bobcat Goalie. Grand Blanc continued pressing and were able to get 3 more goals past Spivey thanks to Defensive breakdowns. The 2nd period saw a combined 34 shots on goal. Both goalies were able to shut down the scorers for the remainder of the period and it ended with OAU up 7-5
The 3rd period was dominated by OAU as they continued to get multiple shots on the Bobcats net. 11 seconds in while on the Powerplay Ben Hepp scored his third goal of the game assisted by Junior Ryan Honig; then minutes later Hepp assisted on a goal by Senior Donovin Thompson. OAU went up 10-5 when Brian Budde scored on a beautiful pass play set up by Ben Hepp. Goal number 11 was scored by Nate Poplars, his third tally of the game, while on the Powerplay assisted by Isaac Shellswell and Junior Kyle Vogler. OAU's 12th and final goal of the game was scored by Ryan Honig who fired the puck from the point. Goalie Spivey stopped all 8 shots he faced in the period.
Junior Goalie Austin Spivey made 28 saves on 32 shots. Junior Forward Nate Poplars and Sophomore Forward Ben Hepp each had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead OAU. Sophomore Forward Brian Budde had a goal and 2 assists, and Sophomore Forward Isaac Shellswell added 3 assists.
OAU's next game is on Saturday, February 15th at 8:00pm at the Detroit Skate Club.
