Oxford Avondale United Loses Heartbreaker In OT Against West Bloomfield

The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey team had their home opener against the West Bloomfield Lakers at the Detroit Skate Club on Saturday night November 23rd. The rink was full, with great attendance from the student body who brought a lot of energy to the home club.  OAU started strong out of the gate, controlling most of the first period putting 13 shots on net will letting the Lakers only 6 shots on net. OAU was able to strike first while on the Power Play when Junior Defensemen Ryan Honig fired a shot from the point past the Laker net minder, assisted by Junior Forward Jake Billis. The period ended with OAU up 1-0.

The second period had the Lakers coming out strong and keeping OAU in its own end as they had to kill off multiple penalties. Junior Goalie Brett Dinges stood tall as he faced 19 shots during the period keeping the Lakers at bay, while keeping the score at 1-0.

West Bloomfield was able to tie the game within the first minute of the period on a great play that beat Goalie Dinges high on the blocker side. Both teams took multiple penalties during the period, however OAU were assessed multiple 5-minute majors which put them on the Penalty Kill for most of the period. Junior Goalie Dinges again stood tall making 17 saves to keep the game knotted at 1-1.

The game went into Over Time with OAU down 2 skaters to start the period. It was too much for OAU to overcome as while on the 5 on 3 West Bloomfield was able to work the puck around until Senior J.P. Ayar put a puck in the net for the Lakers Over Time winner.

Junior Goalie Brett Dinges played a tremendous game facing 43 shots!

Next up for OAU is Marysville who comes to the Detroit Skate Club 1-0 on Monday night, November 25th at 6:55 pm.
