OAU Hockey Wins Their Final Game Of 2019

Oxford Avondale United vs Walled Lake Western

Walled Lake Western rolls to 6-1 victory over OAU.

The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey team hosted Walled Lake Western H.S. on Thursday December 19th at the Detroit Skate Club. The first period had both teams trading scoring chances while both goalies made the stops. WLW was able to break through at the 4:26 mark when OAU turned over the puck and WLW beat Junior Goalie Brett Dinges to take a 1-0 lead. Another turn over less than a minute later led to another WLW goal which put the score at 2-0 and that is how the period ended.

The 2nd period started with OAU taking advantage of a WLW turn over when Senior Forward Matt Schultz intercepted a WLW pass and skated it all the way down ice, then making a late pass to Junior Forward Nate Poplars who banged the puck home bring the score to 2-1. WLW was not to be out done as they scored the next 2 goals beating Goalie Dinges on shots right out in front of the net. OAU had thought they had gotten their second goal of the period when Forward Nate Poplars fired a shot under the WLW goalie. The Referee blew the whistle thinking the save was made, only to find that the puck had continued to move and fell into the net. The ruling went against OAU and the period ended 4-1.

The 3rd period was all WLW as the OAU squad, which came in down 4 players, lost another to injury in the game, and had multiple players playing sick could not keep up. OAU also took a couple of penalties, one which led to a Power Play goal for WLW, and gave up another turnover which resulted in a Short Handed goal for Walled Lake Western. Final score was 6-1 in favor of WLW.

Junior Goalie Brett Dinges made 32 saves on 38 shots. Junior Forward Nate Poplars scored his 4th goal of the season.

 

Oxford Avondale United at Bishop Foley United

OAU comes from behind to beat Bishop Foley United 7-4!

The Oxford Avondale United Varsity Hockey Team traveled to Royal Oak on Friday night, December 20th to take on the Bishop Foley United Hockey Team. OAU was coming off a tough loss to WLW, and Bishop Foley an OT loss to Utica the night before. OAU had 2 of their defensemen back but were down 2 forwards. The first period had OAU dominating play from the start, but Bishop Foley was able to strike first 13 minutes in when they beat Junior Goalie Austin Spivey high from close range. OAU was able to even it up less than a minute later when Sophomore Forward Freddy Fresard took a great pass from Sophomore Forward Ben Hepp to tie the game 1-1 which is how the period ended.

The 2nd period had Bishop Foley again strike first beating Goalie Spivey on their first shot to go up 2-1. OAU was able to tie the game 2-2 when Junior Defensemen Brendan Vogler started a breakout, passing to Junior Forward Nate Poplar who slid the puck across to Sophomore Forward Isaac Shellswell who found the back of the net! Bishop Foley was able to take advantage of a Power Play late in the period to go up 3-2.

After some serious locker room directions from the coaches. OAU was able to pick up the pace of their offensive plays scoring 1:37 minutes in when Brendan Vogler fed Senior Forward Matt Schultz who streaked in and beat the Bishop Foley goalie with an awesome move. Six minutes later, Freddy Fresard got his second goal of the game assisted by Matt Schultz. OAU scored again a couple of minutes later when Sophomore Forward Brian Budde scored, assisted by Vogler and Schultz, taking the score to 5-3. Bishop Foley added another goal to get closer at 5-4 but OAU was not going to be denied the win when Isaac Shellswell scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Poplars and Vogler. OAU added a short -empty net goal when Sophomore Defensemen Coen Hao fired the puck the length of the ice to end the scoring. Final Score 7-4.

Junior Goalie Austin Spivey made 22 saves on 26 shots. Sophomores Freddy Fresard and Isaac Shellswell each had 2 goals, while Senior Matt Schultz and Junior Brendan Vogler each had 3 points.
