Oxford swept a double header from Detroit Country Day this Saturday with scores of 13-7 and 12-1.
The day got off to a great start with consecutive hits by Tyler Dejong (3-4, on base all 4 times, 2 doubles, stolen base, 4 runs scored, 2 RBI) and Garett Hiler (3-4, stolen base, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI) before Tanner Stokes (4-4, 3 runs scored, 2 stolen basese, RBI) brought them both home with a big 3 run homerun to jump start the offensive attack. Other offensive standouts included Cooper Schihl (3 walks, 3 stolen bases, run scored), Dylan Brown (2 walks, 2 stolen bases, run scored) and Rex Mayette (1-3, RBI, run scored).
It was a collective effort on the mound in this one with Mayette getting the start and going 2 innings and striking out a batter before giving way to Schihl who threw the next 3 innings, striking out 4 and then Tommy Smalley coming on to finish off the last 2 innings and striking out a Yellow Jacket of his own.
The second game was highlighted by a lot of offense and some spectacular defense led by Ethan Burdua at short stop. He made at least 5 great plays that this author can think of off the top of his head. Hiler also made a great play on what would have been a sure double up the down the left field line and Brock Heilig made a great play in left field. Brennan Mielnicki was solid behind the plate. Joe Roeher got the win, throwing 4 shut out innings while striking out 4 batters along the way. Sean Sherman came on to finish off the game in the 5th inning allowing an unearned run and a strikeout to end the game.
On offense the Wildcats were led by the pitcher himself, Roeher (3-3, walk, 2 doubles, run scored, 5 RBI), Hiler (1-1, 3 walks, a double, stolen base, 3 runs scored), Stokes (2-4, double, stolen base, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI), Mielnick (1-3, 2 runs scored, RBI), Gabe Debo (1-3, 2 stolen bases, run scored, RBI), and Burdua (1-2, walk, stolen base, run scored). Oxford will hope to keep the hot hitting going Monday when they get back into league play agains Rochester Adams High School at home.
